Phat beats. This is a term that I really like. Cause it is a very subjective term. For me, it means that an instrumental of a hip-hop or drum’n bass track makes you feel something. It makes you groove with the rhythm, sing over a sample or it lets you jump out of your seat and start to party

Well, a beat is something very conceptual. You built drum-patterns and add bass, melody or samples to it.
I tried to transport this conceptual-approach to my ambigram. It’s not really about legibility, it’s more about the concept.

Well, if you ask someone somewhere in the world about the germans, you often get an reaction like “You mean the NAZIS?!”. Hmm, we all have to deal with our past, but for us germans it is important that everyone knows … Hitler is dead and the NAZIS are destroyed! There still are some crackbrained groups left, but I think there are a lot of countrys who have to deal with that kind of problems. Germany is a place with really nice people – believe me

The term “Nazis raus” (Nazis out) is well known in germany and often used on shirts, stickers, walls, etc. I did about 20 sketches before I found the final direction and I am very happy with the final Slaaambigram. In your face, Mr. Nazi, hahaaa.

Damn, this is great!!!

This one was a must! As a german and a fan of the game of basketball I can’t say it loud enough: Diiiirk Nowitzki is THE man. This year a 13-year journey came to an end. Dirk finally got a ring. He wrote his own page of NBA History with a great season and a ridirkulous playoff- and final-perfomance.

So, here we got my tribute ambigrams. riDIRKulous. It was a tough challenge to finally get a solution that makes me feel good The O/D really got me headaches.

Here is one more Dirk related design. No ambigram, it was more a stylecheck, but I like the look.

The third mirror-ambigram. Mike Patton / Fantomas. The perfect setting for a great concert with some crazy musicians. I would love to see this as an official tour-poster on day. So, please spread the word

This is my favourite mirror-ambigram so far, because I think it shows the power of symmetry very well. The look is very strong and elegant (… and spooky).

This ambigram was a submission for the ACAC-Contest. I tried to come up with an idea for the ambigram-community. The ACAC is very popular within the ambigram-community and it’s always fun to compete with all the other ambigrammists. In some ways the ACAC reminds me of a hip hop freestyle battle. At both, you have to compete with words, style and a fresh mind

I wasn’t very familiar with mirror-ambigrams, but this contests challenged us to bring something new to the table. So, I tried three different mirror-ambigrams. Derek Rose, The Battle of Ambigrams and Mike Patton / Fantomas. I’m happy that I found three complete different styles and solutions to finish this journey into the world of mirrors.

On July 1st, I will post several ambigrams I did over the last weeks and months. NBA Playoff-Basketball took my time … GO MAVS, GO DIIIRK!!! … but now I’m ready to step back on the slambigram-court again

For the latest ACAC I thought about possible ambigrams and remembered that I didn’t make a basketball related slambigram for a long time. To long! Derrick Rose came to my mind and I tried some sketches on different words. The goal was a mirror-ambigram. If Rose gets the MVP-Award I want to create something strong and proud. A mirror-ambigram would fit perfect.

Another thought was to include my slambigram in a tribal style illustration and I had two ideas in mind.  Derricks head or the Chicago Bulls head. I started to work out different sketches and ideas but I always thought that I had to build a biiig design around this and I decided to take this project on the side and give it a little bit more tim to grow in my mind.

So, here we got the latest designs and sketches. Would be nice if I could get some feedback or ideas to push this to the limits.

I like the overall look and feel but there is still some room for improvement. The spacing of the ROSE ambigram isn’t perfect and needs some adjustment and I believe I will redraw the DERRICK ambigram.

Above are some alternative designs with the secondary ambigram. Bulls or Derrick. I chose Derrick at the end.

Later I will implement this into a big tribal layout and I hope I could find more little ambigrams that I could integrate into the design.

There is no winner for this challenge…at least not yet. After putting our heads together, we decided that because of the unique nature & diverse content of this challenge, we would let the ambigram community determine the winner!
